Custom Pony - Luna by Modern-Warmare Custom Pony - Luna by Modern-Warmare
Edit: 5-5-13
This is THE Luna, the custom that put me on the map, my most popular work, and one of my earliest triumphs as a custom maker. You and tens of thousands of other pony fans have seen her around the internet over the past two years. I swore I would only make two Lunas, one for her S2 debut (which was sold on eBay), and this one I've kept for myself. I've had dozens of offers to purchase her--now she can be yours.

I treasure her dearly, but now, alas, the financial situation outweighs the sentimental value. You can own one of the most renowned customs in bronydom for $85 or best offer.

If you're interested, note me on dA or send me an email at Paypal only, shipping not included.

Bait: Pinkie Pie (believe it or not)

I'd wanted to do a Luna since I first saw her, but decided to hold off and see if she got an official toy release. Well she did.… I...wasn't taken by it. So I took that as the masochistic go-ahead to make my own.
Luna is the first pony that I really messed up on. That is, I dug myself in too deep and had to rush to Target for an emergency body donor. It worked out in the end, though.

Luna in the show has a body type that's less like a typical pony and more like a miniature Celestia. This was made back in the day before the unique "Luna/Cadance" body type, so I tried to mimic those proportions in the toy where feasible, like making my own wings and horns and elongating her neck. Her muzzle and ears are completely resculpted. I also tried elongating her legs at the joints, which is how I ruined body #1. Being a princess, I thought it fitting to bling out her jewelry and cutie mark with a little iridescent paint medium, with results...slightly better than those in the photo. Oh well.

I rehaired her with Dollyhair's Water Hyacinth blend, which mixes blue and lavender for a shimmery, iridescent effect. Luna's "true" hair color is probably Water Nixie but I liked the results of the blend. Someone on Ponychan /merch/ mentioned weaving the hair plugs which worked quite well, so thank you for the tip, brony. Styled as always with boiling water, drinking straw curlers, and prayers to my lucky stars that I wouldn't screw the whole thing up.

And look at that, I finished her up by the date of the Lunar Eclipse. So thanks for everything Luna, and hope to see a whole lot more of you in Season 2.

maaan, i am so tempted, even though my funds really don't want me to at this point in time. i may possibly wait until you're open for regular commissions, though, what would be the lowest you'd be willing to go for her?
Modern-Warmare Featured By Owner May 9, 2013
Lowest? I'll get back to you on that. Send me a note if you're interested. I could put her on hold.

Regular custom commissions though, as far as I can tell you, are probably never happening again. Too little time, too many more important things in my life now. :( That's why I"m having this little "fire sale" in the first place; I'm closing the shop.
las-pegasus Featured By Owner May 9, 2013
Aww, that's too bad. But I'll drop you a note about Luna. :)

Although pretty late in finding this, I must say this is great work, and all for a Pinkie base? CRAZY!!!

Anyway, just letting you know how great this turned out.

I agree with the fact that little luna is...gross. I absolutely HATE tinsel. It is impossible to style and just gets everywhere. Right now my luna is sitting with a bobby pin in her head to make a bun -_-. I should try what you did!
Modern-Warmare Featured By Owner Jul 15, 2012
They're making a new Luna with the alicorn mold used for Cadence. She looks really nice except for the tinsel! I bought a Gala pack of the Mane 6 with tinsel hair...I had some luck removing it by stretching the strands until they were hair-thin, then cutting them close to the base with a nail clipper. There will always be some remnants, but they were mostly hidden under the rest of the hair.

this is just have to tell me how you made this! i'm desperately trying to figure out how to make my own but i just cant find the right thing. i want my ponies to look like this!

She looks so pretty. <3 I'm too lazy to make a custom Luna myself, so I bought the one that comes with the Celestia w/ sculpted hair. She looks weird though. :u I plan to fix her eyes a bit and repaint the crown she came with as well as paint her collar/necklace and shoes on her.

I'm sorry but I've never understood; whats a bait?
Modern-Warmare Featured By Owner Apr 26, 2012
For all intents and purposes, it's the "official" pony toy that was used to make the custom pony. I bought a Pinkie Pie from a store and turned her into Luna.

How odd; I always pictured Luna a bit ...bigger
Modern-Warmare Featured By Owner Jan 19, 2012
As the description said, I couldn't alter the stature without possibly destroying the pony (and I did once.)

My second Luna has corrected, taller proportions.

Do you have a tutorial on how to make/paint them?
Modern-Warmare Featured By Owner Jan 3, 2012
I do have an FAQ [link] that refers to some tutorials.
KaiDrawn Featured By Owner Dec 31, 2011
I'm modding a luna myself and wanted to ask, what temperature/time did you bake her at, if you did that to set the sculpey? I'm worried I might melt her, and I dyed the body so I don't think boiling is the best option.
Modern-Warmare Featured By Owner Jan 2, 2012
I wrote up an FAQ to help with pony-making questions, you'll find good pony-baking info there. [link]

Good call on the boiling. Not only does the dye bleed, but the tints leach out unevenly and the pony changes color. When I tried boiling a pony that I had dyed brown, it bled out its red tint and turned black! I definitely don't recommend it.
KaiDrawn Featured By Owner Jan 2, 2012
Thanks! I've done some experimenting with boiling and various different ways to dye or remove dye from ponies, but baking is something I haven't done before and I'm glad to have some input.

I saw a Luna toy at Target, and didn't know it was her. The toy is Twilight Sparkle purple, with a tiny glittery horn and her cutie mark is tiny, not covering her whole flank but just the leg. Also the body is really wide, probably for the batteries. Considering redoing it, but i can't change the body shape. It just confuses me. I'm just gonna cut off the horn and call her Glow.
